Bob Slota was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1937 and graduated from the University of Notre Dame, with honors, in 1958, after which he was awarded a full scholarship to Villanova University School Of Law from which he received his J.D. in 1961. While at Villanova, Mr. Slota began his legal writing career with the Villanova Law Review and served on the Board of Editors of that journal.
Bar Admissions
After graduation from law school, Mr. Slota was admitted to the bar in Illinois, The District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as well as the Federal Courts in Pennsylvania. He has been specially admitted to the bars in New Jersey, Delaware, Idaho and the Federal District Court in Colorado for the purpose of trying major cases in those states, and has tried cases in South Carolina and more than a dozen counties in Pennsylvania, concentrating on the counties in the Philadelphia area.
Areas of Practice
Mr. Slota has been a trial lawyer since 1962, representing victims seriously injured or killed by defective products, construction accidents, automobile accidents, dangerous buildings and premises, medical malpractice, medical devices, and insurance misconduct. He was one of the pioneers in actions involving Jeep rollovers, achieving multimillion dollar recoveries on behalf of victims. He also successfully held accountable the manufacturers of dangerously flammable children's clothing which has caused catastrophic burns to innocent children, has recovered full compensation on behalf of the child victims of teacher misconduct and has achieved multimillion dollar recoveries for innocently injured victims whose claims insurance companies, in bad faith, had denied. Mr. Slota has recovered millions of dollars for children who have suffered injuries at birth as a result of doctor, nurse or hospital carelessness in prenatal and birthing treatment, which have allowed these children to obtain all of the medical care and special services they need. His experience in medical cases includes helping patients who have suffered preventable strokes, improperly treated fractures, improperly treated children's heart defects, and HMO misconduct. By jury verdict, he has achieved compensation for the victims of fraudulent conduct in business deals and also recovered punitive damages for such victims.
Organizations and Affiliations
Bob Slota has been an active member of the American Trial Lawyers Association for over 40 years , as well as the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association, the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association, and the Montgomery County Trial Lawyers Association. He is also an active member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Philadelphia Bar Association, and the Montgomery County Bar Association, and has chaired and served on numerous committees of those associations. He was selected to serve on the Judiciary Committee of the Montgomery County Bar Association, the function of which is to interview judicial candidates and make recommendations regarding their qualifications for judicial office. He has been chairman of the Montgomery County Bench Bar Committee and the Montgomery County Medical Legal Committee. He is a member of the Trial Lawyers Section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, the Medical Malpractice Section of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association and the Professional Negligence Section of the American Trial Lawyers Association. He is one of the original Pennsylvania members of the International Society of Primerus Law Firms.
Presentations and Legal Articles
Bob Slota had published articles and lectured on his specialties, particularly on trial practice, medical malpractice and products liability. He has been invited to lecture to the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association on how to compel manufacturers to disclose confidential product testing and analysis which revealed concealed knowledge of product defects, and has counseled physicians on their duty to patients and how to avoid errors in treatment and patient handling.
Appointments
Mr. Slota currently serves as Discovery Master in the Court of Common Pleas of Montgomery County, in which position he hears and resolves disputes regarding discovery in matters pending before the Court. He has served as an arbitrator appointed by the American Arbitration Association and has been appointed by numerous attorneys to serve as an arbitrator in serious injury cases. He was also selected by the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia to serve as a Judge Pro Tempore in that Court.
